Adopt an Old-Timer
I came across a news brief today in the San Diego Union Tribune that San Diego Animal Shelters in Bonita, Carlsbad and Mission Valley are waiving fees for adopting older dogs or cats, or for adopting any dog or cat that has been in the shelter for more than 30 days.
Personally, I feel that adopting an older animal is a great idea, especially if you are working or not home a lot. Older pets are mellower. You probably won’t have to worry about them chewing up your favorite shoes or your leather-bound copy of Shakespeare.
Not only that, older animals desperately need homes. It’s normal to be attracted to puppies and kittens. They’re cute and frisky. You want to cuddle them. Maybe they are the answer for young families with children but remember, they also require a great deal of attention. They chew things up. Tear apart your furniture. They need to be potty trained. Generally, you won’t find this with an older animal.
Of course, any animal is going to need some adjustment, but by their nature, older pets will simply be more relaxed. They’ll be grateful for a home where they can kick back, enjoy some attention and simply be loved.
Older pets are an especially good choice if you work away from home and will be gone for long periods of time, or if you simply don’t have the time or energy to work with a young dog or cat.
So if you live in San Diego County and have been thinking about getting a dog or cat, head down to one of the above-mentioned shelters and adopt an older dog or cat. They will love you for it!

Another great post! If you stop by my blog, you can see I wholeheartedly agree. I’ve posted some great reasons to adopt an older dog (http://canineconnection.today.com/2008/03/10/great-reasons-to-adopt-an-adult-dog/). They really do make wonderful pets, and it’s heartbreaking to think these wonderful animals get passed up time and again in favor of puppies. Thanks for giving everyone something to think about!
